MAURITIUS
Don't kill the chicken with the golden eggs!
Official money of Mauritius is Maurician rupie which is worth about the 40th part of an Euro.
To make it easier for European customers,largest majority, hotels, restaurants, shops... decided to display prices in Euros calculated on the lowest exchange rate. But credit cards payments have to be done in rupies.
As the basic price in rupies is never displayed, the final price is calculated on the Euro basis
so that tourists pay twice the change first at the bying rate for the calculation of the display prices from rupies to Euros, secondly at the selling rate for the change back from Euros to rupies.
The difference? about 10%! Twice de banks' commissions.
Tourists are not all stupid...
