Kenya
Reopening
of the Muthaiga Golf Club
top championship course
After two years and $1 million worth of intensive work on
its golf course, Kenya's prestigious Muthaiga Golf Club, had
its long awaited reopening last month, forging itself once
again as the top championship golf courses in East and Central
Africa.
Most
visited for it's wildlife safaris, Masai warriors, beaches
and ranch living, Kenya is little thought of as a destination
for golfing holidays, however, it is these attractions that
contribute to a golfing holiday here being the most memorable
possible for both professional and amateur golfers alike.
The
Muthaiga Golf Club is host to the annual Kenya Open Golf Tournament
which takes places in March each year and attracts both local
and international competitors and is part of the safari circuit
of the European PGA Challenge Cup. As well as this, it is
also the home of the Kenya Golf Union, patron of which is
H.E. President Mwai Kibaki.
Peter
Markovitch, the South African course architect of Arabella,
one of the top ten courses in South Africa, was asked to redesign
Muthaiga's golf course. He introduced, amongst other elements,
lakes and parklands, adding both interest and challenge to
this top class course. For the visiting golfer, Kenya has a
broad appeal. The avid golfer can fashion his safari to include
some wildlife viewing as well. A golfer who prefers to laze
on the beach can still fit in a game or two and the business
traveler, with an afternoon off, can easily play his favorite
game right on his doorstep. Kenya, as a destination, definitely
ticks most, if not all the boxes on any golfing holiday wish
list
