BAHRAIN

Riffa Golf Club to Host PGA Seniors Tour Final

The PGA European Seniors Tour will make a historic maiden visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain later this year when Riffa Golf Club hosts the grand finale of the season. The Seniors Tour Championship will be the most prestigious seniors event ever held in the Middle East and will be staged at the Club from 10th to 12th November.

The tournament will see the leading fifty-one professionals on the PGA European Seniors Tour Order of Merit battle it out for a prize purse of US$450, 000. The winner will also receive the John Jacobs Trophy for topping the PGA European Seniors Tour Order of Merit.

Scotland's John Chillas will be defending the title following his 2004 win at the Oitavos Golfe in Qunita da Marinha, Portugal.

"We are delighted to have been selected to host this major international event," said Riffa Golf Club's General Manager, Michael Braidwood. "This decision is a testimony to the quality of our facilities, both here at the Club and in Bahrain as a whole."

"One of the main objectives of the Bahrain International Golf Course Company has always been to promote and develop the sport of golf within the Kingdom," said Shaikh Mohammed bin Isa Al Khalifa, Vice Chairman of the company. "The decision to hold this event in Bahrain will go a long way towards doing exactly that and will be a boost for the country's tourism industry too."

In addition to the tournament itself, the event will also feature two Pro Am tournaments in the days prior along with a "development" tournament featuring six regional amateur golfers. Several junior golf clinics will also be held during the tournament, which will assist in the development of the game. It is also expected that a number of former Ryder Cup players will possibly take part in the Seniors Tour Championship, including Sam Torrance, Eamon Darcy and Manuel Pinero.

The PGA Seniors Tour Championship will be promoted by SP Middle East, a joint venture between SP Holdings PLC and the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Riffa Golf Club is managed by PGA Golf Management, a commercial division of the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland.
