CYPRUS
Where golf overlooks Aphrodite's birth place
Where to stay
Arriving from the airport, at Kato Paphos (down town), there is a small Greek temple,
which dominates the highest roof and catches the eye.
There is an owl in the centre of the temple and this is
the emblematic signal of the Amathus Beach ****Hotel. The typical Cyprus
monasteries have inspired the monastic architectural design and the hotel has been
conceived from a desire to fulfil the ancien tradition of genuine hospitality, or
"philoxenia", in the modern luxury of five-star accommodation. While a golden
statue of Aphrodite has pride of place in the centre of the ground lobby, its 257 superb
room and suites are an ideal base for touring - and golfing - in the West of Cyprus (where
the courses are located). The Amathus Hotel is at two kilometres from the fishing harbour
of Paphos and it takes about 20 to 30 minutes maximum to reach one or another of the three
golf courses.
Five restaurants offer a large choice of cuisine. La Rotisserie offers sample culinary
excellence while Amoroso is elegant with outstanding local or international cuisine and a
live background music. The Byzanthium and its extension over the sea The Orangery is the
coffee shop where breakfast with local dishes and specialities is served. Last but not
least La Terrazza looking outside over the pool side serves Mediterranean food under the
skies. Four bars, health and leisure centre, sports facilities and a large sandy beach
along the Mediterranean sea surrounded by landscaped gardens of sub-topical
vegetation
a small paradise for Gods.
The Saint-George ****Hotel Golf and Beach Resort
is located directly on the beach of Chlorakas village at five minutes drive from the
Paphos harbour and 20 minutes from the Paphos airport. Golf cart, bag, clubs and other
golf devices remind to those who don't know it that this 245 rooms hotel is owned by the
same company who manages the two first golf courses around Pahos: The Tsada and the Secret
Valley Golf clubs. So that it is more or less dedicated to golfers and offers special golf
packages.
Most of the rooms have a sea view over the beach and pools and the hotel offers the
complete range of sports facilities, from tennis to gym, sauna to Jacuzzi, swimming to
hydro massage. Tee time and transportation to the golf courses are organized at the
reception.
Aphrodite Hills, which encompasses 578
acres (234 hectares) of land, will dedicate 8% of it for developing real estate resort
with a vibrant village, a five star Inter-Continental Resort Hotel which
is expected to open in the spring of 2004.
But the full range of accommodation is available in
Paphos or in the surroundings from *****hotels to B&B or condos for rent. The Cyprus
Hotels Guide is available in every Cyprus Tourism Office but, the most convenient way is
on the official Cyprus tourism website.
