a_ico_fleche.gif (102 octets) Where to play

Madrid is one of the capitals best equipped for the keen golfer. It has courses located in beautiful countryside and excellently conditioned even in very hot summer times.

All around the capital, there are about twenty golf clubs some of them being strictly private like the very exclusive traditional and historical course of Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro, inaugurated in 1904, where polo can also be played but, where visitors have to be accompanied by a member and respect very strict rules. Fortunately there are some other open courses and not the worst.

The Club de Campo Villa Madrid is considered as one of the most important sport complexes in Europe and offers two 18-hole and a 9-hole par-3. Located at a drive distance from the center of Madrid along the Carreterra de Castilla, the courses have been designed over about 250 hectares of hills surrounding the Spanish Agricultural Research Center under maritime pine trees and cork oaks. Javier Arana and Severiano Ballesteros where the designers of the courses, the Amarillo (yellow) being easier (relatively) than the Negro (black) which welcomes every year different professional competitions (Open de Madrid, Open de Espana, Copa de Europa…).
At first sight from the club-house, the courses look wide, but playing one discover it is not that much large and that hits have to be accurate. There no water hazards but a lot of bunkers at the good places. Moreover when it comes to the greens which are mainly elevated and well defended. Anyway a great pleasure to enjoy good golf while having an eye on the beautiful views to the city from many different tee boxes or greens. All golf facilities around the club-house and its terrace facing the skyline of Madrid.

West of Madrid, there are two golf clubs which are located in the same direction not far away one from the other. The Club de Golf La Dehesa is an 18-hole course where it is important to stay out its big bunkers. The front nine is very technical with two water hazards and the back nine is beautifully designed in the lower part of a valley along a river in a very quiet environment. The Club de Golf Lomas Bosque has 18 + 9 holes is located around a large long pool in a beautiful natural setting with holm oaks, rockroses and brooms.

The other golf courses are: that of the Club Jarama Race, with 18 holes, magnificently located with the Monastery of El Escorial in the background; the Nuevo Club de Golf de Madrid in Las Matas; the Campo de Golf of Somosaguas; the two 18- holes of La Moreleja, the last one designed by the famous American player, Jack Nicklaus; that of Valdeaguila and that of the Central Deportivo del Barberán with 9 holes, ten kilometers from Madrid.

At a bit more distance but in tourist sectors, the Herreiria Club de Golf is located at 500 m from the entry of the Monastery of El Escorial which can be seen all along the hole #8 and the Campo de Golf de Los Pinos and the Real Soc. Hipica at Aranjuez which are two a nine hole.
