From beaches to steep cricks on the coast to architectural and cultural treasures hidden in the inland, the Costa Blanca is a rich tourist country which deserves to be discovered. In fact there many tours to be done and many places to be seen out off the numerous celebration, fair or festival which take place all the year around.

At about an hour drive from Valencia South, the natural park of Montigo with the castle of Denia, is the northern limit of the Costa Blanca. The park is worth a visit to the cape San Aontonio where by clear weather the Baleares Island can be seen and the cape Nao to overview the fisher harbours of Javea, Moraira, Calpe, Altea, the Penon de Ifach, famous rock emerging from the sea like an enormous shark, the Benidorm's towers, the old city of Vila Joyosa and in the far end the whole Alicante bay.

You like or dislike Benidorm and his skyscrapers. It's the modern seaside resort where each renowned architect wants to build the highest building along one of the two beaches, Levante or Poniente, where in season it's difficult to find a square meter free to sit down on the hot sand. Nightlife is hectic.

The thematic Entertainment Park Terra Mitica has been located on the hills just behind Benidorm on the other side of the highway 6. It has become a major attraction point.

South of Torrevieja, a new seaside resort erected around the Torra de moro, is renown for his habaneras, nostalgic songs contest which takes place in August at the Casino.

In the hinterland, the palm grove of Elche, which provides palm trees to all the European countries, deserves a visit as well as the "Priest Garden" and his exotic plantations. Not far away from Bonalba, Jijina is known for his turrones and Alcoï for his toys factories. From there a wonderful tour goes through the dry rocky mountains with castles and towers atop summits to the Castel del Guadalest perched on a rocky bone overhanging a deep banked river, el rio de Guadalest. On the way down to the seashore, at Gata de Goros local craft workshops of hemp, rattan and spart devices deserve a stop.

For wine lovers, it is recommended to visit the country of Vinalpo and Alto. A lot of castles, but good local gastronomy and wines (Monovar, Sax, Villema, Biar) as well as Aspe, Monforte del Cid and Petrer.

a_ico_fleche.gif (102 octets) 415 local feasts

Yes, there are about 415 local very popular feats all along the year in the Costa Blanca country. Some of them like the Moor and Christians are very spectacular with their majestic parade in historical costumes with dances, battles and backfire.

But the most important are the St-John Fires in Alicante which last more than a week long around the 24th of June each year. Each quarter of the city participates by building an immense satirical toon of paper and cardboard worth of the most spectacular carnivals in the world. And those ninots as they call them will be burned in the St-John night, which introduced five nights of extraordinary fireworks. In the same time, rock and techno's orchestra play all the nights along over flooding the city with more noise than real music. In fact, the tourist guide dedicated to the Fogueres de San Juan is clear: it concludes "forget sleeping during the feast and go and sleep on the beach during the day time".
