We must remember that it is already a long time ago (where were you in the summer of 1907 ?) that the legendary Arnaud Massy won the British Open. That same year (were you at the inauguration ?) that the second Basque golf links was opened. Rue Arnaud Massy leads right to the La Nivelle course.

Many parameters should prompt a certain amount of humility as regards to the bad hits carried out on this course. Before throwing your putter in to the air, give a thought for all the generations of Basque champions who trod the fairways. Also remember that some holes are tiring or present difficult slopes to negotiate.

The evidence is there but it really was not easy. The conception of the Makila Golf Club at Bassussary had to overcome a host of administrative and financial tempests which came on top of independence threats and environmental lobbies.

The site responds to a beauty that only the Basque Country can offer, the difficulty having been to preserve the wild aspect of the environment yet still keeping the course friendly-user to all. Wide fairways are isolated one from the other to give an American style in the good sense of the term with the Pyrenees producing several backgrounds.

Added to that an excellent table worthy of the best Basque country chef served in a luxurious club-house. The golf links, which you should not miss, is five kilometres from Biarritz.

a_ico_fleche.gif (102 octets) Moliets

La Côte d'Argent deserves more than a visit to its golf course. We are in the heart of the Landes region in the south west of France which is the most protected and natural area in whole country. Such a site could not be transformed by no matter who. Trent Jones' intelligence brought the Moliets golf links to be listed amongst the most beautiful of the country.

Moliets induces you to cultivate the art de vivre with an exceptional environment. Cut into a pine wood, the golf links proposes thirteen holes in a forest and five on the seaside, every hole presenting a different aspect.

There are five starting areas for the hilly fairways and, fortunately wide enough to avoid (unless you wish to have a quick slight flirt with your partner !) the roughs, it is true, superb but inextricable.

The impression of the open air, absolute relaxation and the soothing space predominate Moliets. You will appreciate your round even more is you use a small golfing car for the distances between the greens and the starting places and the undulating of the course.

For your information, the nine holes are for those with a high handicap. Moliets proposes the ideal extension for Basque golf and as a local journalist, who is always on the look-out for good words, put it that this links is a 'chip off the excellent old block !'
