FRENCH WEST INDIES

Golf in Martinique & Guadeloupe

- Where to stay

Following the hard strike chasing out the tourists at the peak season the Meridien Hotel at St-François (which was the only 5 stars hotel) has disappeared and investors are very reluctant nowadays to develop new luxury hotels in the French Caribbean. The Sofitel Bakoua in Martinique and the Cocoteraie in Guadeloupe are the only two four stars hotels completely booked in season.

Staying at the Club Med, the famous Buccaneer’s Creek, is the perfect place to enjoy the combination of French flair and Caribbean fun. First its location, on a beachfront property of 55 acre at Sainte-Anne in the landscape of the Pointe Marin from where the sunset can be seen behind the Diamond Rock is exceptional. Secondly after $50 million improvements in contemporary new designs, furniture and high coloured texture combined with an updated comfort, its reopening in 2006 has been a great success. The multicoloured bungalows are scattered under in the middle of a coconut palm grove throughout tropical gardens and rooms and suites come with up dated goodies from CD players or flat-screen TV to Deluxe rainshowers. The resort includes a 5000 square-foot pool surrounded by plush daybeds offering sparkling sea views where to sip the free drinks included in the board.
For lunch and dinner there are two open-air restauarnts with hundreds of choices between international meals and local Martinque’s cuisine which reflects the local Creole specialties combine French finesse with spicy African cookery and exotic East and South Asian recipes. Fresh seafood appears with other specialties like shellfish, stuffed land crabs, sewed conch and curry dishes. Out off the two restaurants, a smaller one is located in the discothèque for specialty dinners like couscous, Chinese, Italian or Indian dishes. Most sports and nightly entertainment are included but some excursions, scuba and certification or golf related expenses are at charge as Sunset Cruise or Caribbean Coast Cruise

- in Guadeloupe
Between sea and golf, the Meridien Hotel has been for long time the nec plus ultra of accommodation in the Guadeloupe island. But, following a hard strike and different corporate issues, the 396 room-hotel has been sold.
Nowadays the next-to-the door “Cocoteraie” claims the name of Meridien on its headed note paper but it seems it wouldn’t last for long time anymore.
Anyway, the Cocoteraie is considered as the best and cosiest hotel of Saint-François. Its 52 suites with private terrace in colonial style bungalows open to the Marina, the private beach or the lagoon swimming pool and its traditional Chinese blue vases..
From the magnificent swimming pool to the reception area in pure Colonial style, every detail has been designed to cater to the needs of each guest and the smiling, friendly staff contributes to a truly memorable stay.
The "Indigo Bar", right next to the pool, offers an endless array of cocktails, including their colourful rum-based specialities. "La Varangue" restaurant is the perfect place to linger over breakfast or dinner, with its lovely setting and refined cuisine.
And for golfers, they just have to cross over the road.
