Luxembourg : a fortress in a green case

As one can see it throughout the historical model displayed at the Ratskeller, the Municipal Circle, Luxembourg was during centuries one of the most powerful fortresses built in a very special context. The old town bas been settled on the Bock, a natural rock protected by a deep valley where runs a very small brook called Petrusse. Though it has been brought down from in 1867, the fortified city has conserved numerous vestiges like the ruins of the Luxembourg Castle and the gigantic fortifications nowadays turned into parks and promenade with the famous old blockhouse burrowed directly in the underground rock. A very interesting visit.

In the centre of the fortress, stays the Grand Ducal Palace in a Renaissance style, the House of Common and the cathedral in which crypt is buried Joan the Blind, king of Bohemia and Earl of Luxembourg, killed at the Crecy Anglo-French battle in 1434. In the very centre of the city, the Place d'Armes has been closed to traffic and pedestrian can enjoy a drink at one of the surrounding terraces while listening concerts given in the kiosk by the local military band. Two paces away from there go shopping in the Grand Rue, which was the former Via Romana from Reims to Aachen.

All around the capital, there are numerous rock-castles like Bourglinster, Septfontaines, Useldingen, Beaufort, Hollenfells… The nature is so rich, flourish and verdant that they all seem like emerging from a green case.

Oesling, Sür, and Müllerthal. Up to north, the Ardennes country is a contrast with the "flat" land". High plateaux and hills of forests with rocky and deeply embanked valleys offer multiple walks and trips. Clervaux and his abbey, Wiltz ancient city of tanning industries and capital of broom in springtime, with his Museum of Ardennes battle between von Rundstet German Army and General Patton American Army in winter 1944-45 deserve a visit. Along the river Our, see Vianden and his extraordinary Orange-Nassau family's feudal manor.

Between Oesling and flat land, the river Sûre is a verdant valley, nowadays a natural park. Nearby the Müllerthal (mill valley) is also called the "little Luxemburger Swissland" and Echternach is his main city mostly known for his dancing procession at Pentecost Tuesday which attract people from around Europe.

The Moselle and the wineries. Sûre River flows into the Moselle at Wasserbilig (cheap water). From here to Schengen - which name is known for the European free circulation treaty signed there - vineyards have invaded all the riverbanks. The visit can be done by road or by boat on the MS Princess Marie-Astrid.

Stopover at Grevenmacher with his narrow streets and the Bernard-Massard winery. At Remich, on the road from Luxembourg to Sarrebrücken, at Remerschen Wiltringen, Schengen which are as many well known places for their excellent wineries. On the way back to Luxembourg, Mondorf les Bains deserves more than a stop. Charming city known for his thermal springs et the Parc Hotel du Domaine thermal where golfers are welcome and at a few minutes from the championship course of Preisch.
