Food and drink - Malta is not a gourmet destination but there's no shortage of cafes and restaurants. Local specialties include pastizzi (savoury cheese pastries), timpana (a macaroni, cheese and egg pie), and fenek (rabbit), baked in tomato sauce (delicious) to eat in a small bistrot. Seafood is everywhere. Malta makes good beers and its wines have to be tasted (the quality is improving year by year). Maltese bread handkneaded is known for its perfect quality.

Good to know
Valetta, government town, is not known for lively night life. For that, tourists and Maltese alike go to St.Julian's. For music and bars to Paceville.
Another spot in Valletta of more down-to-earth veneration is the Pub, the hole-in-the-wall British bar near the Grand Master's Palace where actor Oliver Reed dropped dead in 1999 during the filming of Gladiator. A framed newspaper clipping on the wall reads, "Ollie's last Order. Eight lagers with the wife, 12 double rums with a group of sailors and a quick half bottle of whisky."
Malta is noted for its fine crafts - particularly its handmade lace, handwoven fabrics, blown glass and silver filigree to see at Ta Qali, crafts village near Mdina. Folk traditions in music are very strong, and Malta holds a folksong competition every year.
