Agadir
counts, for the time being, three golf clubs open to the public
: the Royal Golf Course (9 holes), the Golf des Dunes (27
holes) and the Golf du Soleil (36 holes) which represent 72
holes. Due to the success of golf which drains each year more
and more players to Agadir, plans are ready to extend the
capacity to 108 holes (maybe to 126).
At about ten kms on the road to the airport, the 9-hole Royal
Golf Course has been for years the only one
in Agadir. It goes back to 1955 when a Scottish golf enthusiast,
named Wilson, dug a hole in what was then only a luxuriant
fallow land. A few years later, another enthusiast, called
Colonel Kamili, continued the work. He designed the nine holes
and their triangular setting bordered with flowers, the Agadir
Royal Golf Club. It is a par 36 of 3,600 meters long with
fairways perfumed by pines, eucalyptus and mimosa, fragrances
that blend with the tang of the nearby ocean ... It is a delightful
course preferred by players who dislike narrow and tormented
fairways. After the game, players can meet in the panoramic
club house buried in a cascade of Bougainvillea area.
In 1991, along the same road but nearer from the city, the
Club Med opened the three 9-holes of the Golf
des Dunes designed by Cabell Robinson who has
been assistant to Robert Trent Jones and is also designer
of Amelkis course in Marrakech or El Jadida near Casablanca.
The Dunes is located on an undulating land where eucalyptus,
palm trees, tamarisk and white broom are abundant giving their
natural names to the different courses: Eucalyptus, Oued and
Tamarisk .Before the club-house, the large practice hosts
the golf clinics.
At the next door, along a party wall, stays the Golf
du Soleil which has been created in 1999 by
M. Marrache, owner of the Tikida Hotels. It is now a two 18-hole
designed by the Spanish architect Fernando Muella. Being close
neighbour of the Dunes, the nature and environment are similar
but the architecture is slightly different. The club-house
and its restaurant with terrace overlooks the last greens,
Fairways are lined by high eucalyptus of which the shadow
is very much appreciated. It has also the particularity that
not any hole is straight from tee to green but always bowed.
Good for those who master well draws and fades. Water hazards
are present on many holes where the second shot has to overfly
the water to reach the green. Some holes have fantastic views
to the Atlas mountains in the background. The practice and
the golf academy are nearby the very welcoming clubhouse.
If the Royal Links, designed by
Robert Trent Jones on the Royal Palace property, is still
a private course only open to pros competition like the Maroc
Open, it is said that in the future, these wonderful championship
course could open its faiwayrs to special occasions or organizations.
Last but not least, there is a project to built in a next
future 27 holes on a property of 90 hectares bought by the
Dorint Group in the same surroundings. So that Agadir could
count 126 holes becoming a great golf yearlong golf estination.
