MOROCCO
The
Southern Royal Golf Road
by R. Bourne
Golf is very popular in Morocco, partly
because King Hassan II was an internationally ranked practitioner
of the game so that golf has found its roots and culture in
this country where nature presents majestic spectacle. More
than 200 holes are already open to golfers and it is planned
to triple in the coming years.
Casablanca Novembre 2003 -Even
if there are only 8 kms between the two “Hercules’
pillars” (Rock of Gibraltar in Spain and Jebel Musa
in Morocco), even if Saracen crossed over to invade Spain
and France during centuries, event if Portuguese created the
ports of Mazagan and Mogador, even if Spain and France crossed
down to colonize Morocco for 44 years until 1956, Morocco
is part of Arab world.
Its courteous, friendly and hospitable population is mostly
Berber speaking Berber, Arabic or French and mixes successfully
European way of life with local traditions. Wisdom and tolerance
are the basis of the legendary hospitality of the Moroccan
people.
Mohammed VI (who succeeded to Hassan II) is the King of Morocco
and its lineage trace to the Prophet Mohammed. While respecting
the tradition and the belief, he introduces modernity in the
country to provide benefits and opportunities to the populace.
Indeed France was the first nation to recognize the independance
of Morocco in 1956.
The country is about the size of the state of California and
is located on the tip of North Africa bordering Algeria to
the east, Mauritania to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the
west, and the Mediterranean to the north. The country has
a mixed terrain crossed by several mountain ranges. The Atlas
Mountains run across the middle of the country to the Atlantic
coast. The Middles Atlas Mountains rise from the south. The
Rif Mountains run along the north cost.
For the travellers, this fascinating country is easily accessible
from any place of the world at international airports. Comfortable
and reliable rail and bus network, excellent roads and a large
number of hotels meeting the expectations of international
tourists.
There are a lot of sites to visit from the medinas of historic
cities, to the mysterious Sahara, the fabulous beaches and
little-travelled forests and mountains dominated by ksars
(fortresses). Visitors can choose to “rough it”
on the back of a camel in the desert, to trek across spectacular
mountains, or to luxuriate in the manicured gardens and spas
of exceptional hotels. And they can enjoy golfing on more
than 200 holes.
