The Belle mare Plage Resort and the Legend golf course
Awarded best golf resort by two international golf associations, Tours Operators (Iagto) and golf writers (Igtwa), Belle Mare Plage Resort deserved this consecration as it has been the first one in Mauritius and is still the only one which has two championship courses. Located along an exceptional beach of 2 kms along the Pointe de Placq, Belle Mare has become the Mecca for golfers in Mauritius .
At the very beginning in 1975, Belle Mare Plage opened only with ten self-catering bungalows of three bedrooms each. The Constance Group took it over in 1992 with the opening of the Legend golf course, the first 18-hole in Mauritius. Nowadays the Resort offers 92 Prestige rooms (which have been renovated in the old style for the faithful customers), 137 junior suites with private balcony and some Deluxe suites ( 96 m² ). 20 villas (with living room, kitchen, private pool, butler service…) and 1 presidential are located under coconut trees and frangipanes, between golf and sea. The president of the EUFA, Michel Platini comes here every year with his family.
The architecture is modern, elegant, in harmony with the natural surroundings. A lot of dark red wooden carpentries sustaining roofs of rice straw give to the main buildings a sort of cloister's look adorned with tropical plants and flowers around. It is at the same time majestic and human minded. Distressing!
Belle Mare Plage organizes till 2006 a gastronomic weekis as the resort is known for its high quality of food in its four restaurants. La Citronelle , country buffet restaurant. Seafood and venison at The Deer Hunter in the club-house over the greens of the Legend, ideal place for romantic diner. Mediterranean dishes at La Sipaggia on the beach.
The Blue Penny Cafe , downstairs in sort of a crypt with cascading waterfalls, is the gastronomic restaurant with very special dishes prepared by the chef Frederic Groisset who mixes flavours and fragrances around fish, seafood or any kind of meat for unique culinary experiences with the appropriated fine wines from around the world. And for those who like it after diner, a choice of cigars is available in a smoking cabinet.
Golfing at Belle Mare Plage is very easy as two championship courses belong to the Resort which organizes till 2004 a very succesful yearly open.
The Legend which lies just on the other side of the road, has been the first course open in 1992. It is a flat course designed by Hugh Baiocchi, South African champion, and the golfers' opinions are controversial because some hazards or greens are not always visible like at the hole 9 where the water surrounded green is protected by a narrow pass which hides your ball pitching down or at the 17 th , the signature hole, where your ball has to fly 152 m over the water. Exciting, isn't it?
The Links, par 71, has been designed as a links course by Peter Allis and Rodney Wright. It has also a completely different look than the Legend as it lies on undulated land so that game is going up and down following the natural design. It is not an easy course as one need to calculate at each hole where to play depending on the winds, the slopes, the bunkers, the waters, the volcanic rocks… A very good challenge!
