Driving in Mauritius...
"When the French were here, we drove right, under the British, we went left. Now that we are independent, we drive in the middle!" saying that between the airport and Touessrock to explain the audacious, but nor aggressive driving way of his compatriots, the Mauritours' driver was bursting out laughing.
It is a matter of fact that, out of the highways, Mauritian roads are narrow and congested with buses, lorries, overcharged trailers with sugar canes all in the middle of cycles and pedestrians and everyone is trying to make its own way through. First pulled out, first gone...
And driving left does not make easier for those who are not used to!
...without signs (almost!)
Moreover! Sort of a common heritage of ancient British colonies, especially islands ( Malta , Virgin Islands .) the road signalization (out of highways) is uncertain: or is very discrete and difficult to see or interpretate or it is simply absent. But as said with a good sense of humour by a local a farmer to whom I confessed! "I am lost!" - "No, sir, here in Mauritius , you are never lost!"
OK! But humour does not replace the signs which will become more andmore necessary to satisfy the future 2 million of tourists awaited by the Government. An effort should be done!
