Shopping is a national obsession in Singapore . But "live to eat" is also a motto. There are always Singaporeans eating something somewhere. Hawker centres come alive early morning for Singaporean's breakfast while reading the morning newspaper. For breakfast Ya Kun Kaya Toast at East Square is a place to enjoy an authentic local one: typical Ya Kun Kaya Toast consists of kaya - coconut jam - and butter spread on charcoal-grilled brown bread served with a hot cup of coffee or tea and two soft-boiled eggs : SGD 3.50. For lunch, enjoy authentic Indian cuisine at Apollo Banana Leaf at Little India and get your fingers dirty as you will eat from a banana leaf. For dinner, go to Lau Pa Sat, pick up what you desire from the stalls which offer a complete range of all Asian cuisines.
Anyway, there is always a place to satisfy hunger or curiosity. At sunset, some streets are closed to the traffic to pitch tables in the centre (one is even called " Food Street "). The Lion city has also a large choice of indoor restaurants where great chefs serve the best of their national dishes or invent refined mixes of different cuisines. And their cooled cellars offer a choice of good wines from around the world.
- " My Humble House " is the first artistic restaurant of the Tung Lok Group, at The Esplanade Mall. Its Chinese coconut soup with scallops, shrimps, crabmeat puts the bar of tastes very high while its signature dish "the wazabi honey mustard prawn" elevates the "art of dining" to exceptional. " Rang Mahal " at Pan Pacific Hotel introduces authentic Indian cuisine in a refined corporate class setting of granite, limestone and dark woods. The show kitchen offers an insight to the chefs at work preparing a cuisine with olive and vegetable oil. As starter, the soup is a silky blend of coconut, coriander and ripened tomatoes while the signature is a curry lamb with chicken tikka, basmati rice, lentils, vegetables and Naan (bred) prepared to your desired taste. - Restaurant Tepak Sireh is located in a historical monument which was home for a former Prime Minister. The buffet is laid out in the hall downstairs and offers recipes from generations of chefs. Drinks : The Singapore Slim is one of those wonderful drinks that we probably have all heard of, but perhaps have never had. The Singapore Sling was originally created for the Raffles Hotel sometime prior to 1910. Here is the original recipe: 30ml Gin - 15 ml Cherry Brandy - 120 ml Pineapple Juice - 15 ml Lime Juice - 7.5 ml Cointreau - 7.5 ml Dom Benedictine - 10 ml Grenadine - A Dash of Angostura Bitters - Garnish with a slice of Pineapple and Cherry.
